Research shows that mental illness is a significant factor in youth-onset homelessness. According to the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, homeless youth face disproportionately high levels of physical and mental health challenges compared to their housed peers. Studies reveal that homeless youth are more likely to experience severe mental health conditions, such as major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizoaffective disorder, while also frequently facing anxiety disorders and PTSD. In contrast, homeless adults often report substance use as a primary precursor to homelessness.
The instability of homelessness leaves these youth vulnerable to further trauma, including trafficking and exploitation. At Basin Dream Center, we provide trauma-informed therapy to support healing and create a positive, stable path forward for each young person we serve.
